When he got back, I saw that he had ordered a small chocolate cake with a note attached to it. I was a little surprised to see this, since Hannes usually goes for something more conventional, like a Swedish cinnamon bun. I asked him how he had chosen this cake, and he explained that the café had an enormous assortment of sweets and pastries, so it wasn’t easy to choose the best piece. He had decided on this particular cake, since it had the note stuck to it.

When I saw that the little sign read “Sarah Bernhardt” I laughed to tears and I’m laughing now when I’m writing this!
As you might know, Sarah Bernhardt is a chocolate cake which is named after the late French actress. Sarah Bernhardt was the most famous actress in the world of the pre-war time, but Hannes thought she was a baker at the café, who signed her pastry with her name.
