Swedish Semla

semla semmelbulle fastlagsbulle fettisdagen semmeldagen svensk god swedish love affairIt’s a very special day in Sweden today, called Fettisdagen, which can be translated into Fatty Tuesday. Today is the day when, according to an old tradition, everyone is supposed to eat at least one semla. A semla is a form of pastry, a cardamom wheat bun with almond paste and whipped cream inside.

To be honest, I started celebrating early and ate one semla yesterday. However, I’m planning to eat more of them today!

Hm, fettisdagen firas i stora delar av världen, även om man inte äter semlor. På franska heter det mardi gras, shrove tuesday på brittisk engelska och fat tuesday på amerikanska. Traditionsenligt skall man äta pannkakor, i alla fall i England.

I remember the Semla from my three months as an Erasmus student in Sweden. We had a huge Semla party the day after Fettisdagen with boxes and boxes of Semla as they go half-price or so then. Good times :)
