Pink mood

What a coincidence! A friend came over just now and brought a bunch of new macaroons! Now we are both planning to actually learn how to bake them ourselves. Although, I’ve heard that it literally takes days, and at one point you have to freeze the dough and then defrost it again!.. I don’t know if that’s true.

Oh my gosh I am obsessed with making macaroons. My sister lived in Southern France for a year and actually had genuine french macaroons. She found a place in Venice, Ca. that she says comes pretty close to the ones she used to have in France, so she brought me some. I have been in love with macaroons ever since. Being the avid baker that I am, I am determined to perfect them. They don’t take days but they are a little time consuming but so worth the effort. I can’t wait to see how yours turn out.

Oh, I’m not saying I’m going to try to make them again, Araceli! The only ones I made didn’t even look like macaroons. Am I understanding you correctly, that you make these yourself?! In that case, that’s pretty amazing.

Oh, hahaha. I completely misunderstood you. Sorry about that. Yes, I make these myself but I still have a lot of room for improvement. I’ve got the technique down but I am still working on flavor. Sometimes they are too sweet and other times not sweet enough. Just can’t get that balance quite right.

        • Antonia says:

Oh, but that’s sounds like the tiniest problem! I mean, they are pretty sweet in the end, right? I couldn’t ask for more!
The technique, that’s the hardest part. Your close ones must love you a little extra for making macaroons:))

Well, I thought I was a little fast jumping on that macaroon baking wagon with my friend:)) But, people here seem to know what they’re talking about (like you), so I might give it a go after all! I just got cold feel after posting this post.

I like your point of view Antonia. They are sweet in the end. Thank you for that. My family definitely likes it when I bake, but then complain to me when their jeans don’t fit ;-)

I think you should try to make them again. Mine didn’t look like macaroons either when I first tried but I kept trying.

I just found a ton of great recipes on this french blog http://www.puregourmandise.com/menu.htm I am hoping I can get my sister to translate the recipes for me (because I don’t trust Google translate) and see if the flavor improves.

I’ve tried to make them once! It wasn’t so much difficult, I thought worst! But of course they weren’t so perfect as the ones you brought :) lovely pics and necklace :)

    • Antonia says:

Thanks, Eleonora! The ones I made didn’t even look like macaroons, more like tiny (pink) pancakes.. I was pretty disappointed, but Hannes (who didn’t know what exactly I was attempting to bake) really liked them. He thought I invented a new kind of cookie, so I didn’t say anything:)

I agree, it does not takes days, but requires a little practice. Home-made macaroons can taste divine, and you can decide the perfect combination. I love raspberry and chocolate.

Ok, I have´nt actually made macaroons, but I´ve seen people do it, and tasted the results.

They’re actually really easy! They were quick to make and I even got a nice foot on mine (the crust on the bottom). The only trick is that you need almond meal which is difficult to make. You can buy it though!

I’ve made macarons before, they are pretty difficult and it took me a few batches to get right. No dough freezing! Ladurée just opened in my neighborhood and the cassis violette ones are to die for.
