Friday’s Fryday

It’s been a very busy week for me, and I’m glad it’s over. Tonight I’m welcoming the weekend with a barbecue on my balcony. One of my friends brought his deep fryer. I’m not really into deep-fried food, but tonight I agreed on giving it another real chance. My friend has been frying everything from bananas and pineapple (such a waste!) to chocolate cake and ice-cream. I can’t say any of this has made a convert out of me.

Do you often use a deep fryer? If so, what’s your favorite “ingredient”?

My boyfriend is from southern US and he introduced me to fried okra. I would NEVER eat okra until I tried it deep fried…its crunchy and delicious! But no, I dont ever use a deep fryer at home..hehe…

Well, coming from Belgium I’d have to say that potatoes is what goes into our deep fryer the most. Belgian fries for the win!

:) I never do it at home, but I love lots of fried stuff when I eat out. Chicken, corn, bananas as you mention.. I’ve thought about getting my own fryer, but I think it might be bad for my health :)

Courgette fritters – because I always grow too many courgettes and run out of ideas as to what to do with them.

Grate a largish courgette (zucchini) into a bowl, salt it and leave for an hour to let the juice out, add around 2 spoonsful of flour to make a fairly loose batter, a little lemon juice, black pepper and herbs or spices to the mixture. Then drop in forkfuls into the hot oil until golden brown. They have to be eaten straight away. They are crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.

You can try it in a pan with at least an inch of oil in it. 3 cms. I know this because i threw out my deep-fat fryer! The fritters are now just about the only thing I deep-fry.
