City of bikes

Sweden has one of the most number of bikes per person in the world, about 65 % of the people here ride a bike. My city is even more extreme. It has the second highest bike density in the world, number one being Beijing.

Taking the bike is often the most practical way of getting around town, and it’s always cheaper than going by car or bus. Biking is good for your health and the environment.

The city’s number of cars hasn’t risen at all here over the last ten years, and today 45 % of all commuters here take their bike to work and school.

I love a good bike ride, but I don’t take it to work. Never thought about it, really :)

How interesting! And what about you, Antonia?

There are so many bikes packed so closed together, it’s a wonder you can find yours in the crowd. It’s incredible that each bike symbolises a car that is not on the road- very good for the environment.
Please give Greger a good scratch on those floppy ears from me.

I love the idea of commuting by bike, but it’s impossible here. So much of the US is designed for cars that commuting by bike anywhere outside the most densely packed of cities is often hard. My school is 8 miles away from my house and my mom’s work is about 16 miles away, and the winter roads are treacherous, so biking isn’t even an option.

This is something I really admire about your country. I can’t imagine it being the case here in Los Angeles. I wish it were. There are too many cars here and I am sure the number of cars will increase dramatically.

The one thing I am noticing on the street more are hybrids. Yay! More and more hybrids which to me makes the most sense what with the price of gasoline being so high. It is one way to reduce toxic emissions but I still think ridding a bike or simply walking is so much better.
