Blogging tips by Antonia

At least once a day I get an email where a girl (so far it’s only been girls) asks me how to attract readers to her website and blog successfully. The answer is “I don’t know”. I’m not a pro and I don’t have much blogging experience. But I can share what I like in a blog and what I don’t.

What I like:

- Nice and unique blog design, that’s the first impression
- Good photography
- Many pictures of the person behind the blog
- It must be easy to comment
- It must be easy to go to the previous page
- The content must be unique, that goes for both photos and texts
- I want to see the personality of the blogger!
- I like blogs with a decent amount of text, not just pictures
- Blogs that update daily
- When a click on the header brings me to the front page. I like that.

.

What I don’t like (any of these can make me leave a website in a second):

- Bad design! Really dark colors or flashing banners are very off-putting
- The same goes for using default designs of the blogging platform
- Verification words (captcha)! These annoy me a lot.
- Bad shaky photos of any kind. Too dark, overexposed etc. Unless it’s art or funny.
- Stolen content. I don’t like it when bloggers don’t link back to the source of the photos and other material they post.
- When I get no presentation of the blogger.
- Bad language. And by that I don’t necessarily mean dirty language. Rather, incorrect use of words, too many exclamation marks, misspellings, incorrect punctuation…
- And the worst of them all. When you open a website and MUSIC starts to play! That’s just more than I can take.
- Right-click protection. What’s that all about?

I hope this helps to answer some of your questions. What do you like and don’t like when it comes to blogs?

Very good list, this is what I like to see in a blog too!
I’ll send this along to any blogger who gets it wrong:)

I hate right-click protection too! I mean, if I wanted to steal your pics (which I don’t, but still), there are still simple ways of doing it. So unnecessary!
And don’t get me started on those captcha. Sometimes I get them wrong, and get told to fill in another one. Stuff like that can make me leave the blog and never come back!
I love your blog, it’s just perfect! :)

    • Antonia says:

Thank you, Clare! I have the same troubles with captcha! If I get it wrong once, there’s no chance in the world I’ll do another attempt!

I HATE <HATE, complicated commenting! Bad, blurry photos, but then again I'm a snob… I think I'm guilty of one which is bad language… I fear that I've been in Tokyo too long I began to speak and write japinglish.

    • mary says:

I think your guidelines are very very good!
I don’t like blogs or posts without images. It’s just hard to get into the subject without it, it feels like it’s missing a (very important) dimension.

    • Antonia says:

      Japinglish sounds cute!;)
And, well, I’m a snob when it comes to these things too.

  4. Susie says:

I HATE that captcha too..that’s the WORST! Agree about the photography too–nothing is more off-putting than bad/lazy photography. You can tell when people don’t make a lot of effort!

  5. julie says:

I hate captcha too! Whenever I have to fill it in, I feel so distrusted. I like your system, much more open, friendly and welcoming.
I don’t even know what right-click protection is, but I trust your judgement and now dislike that too.

Another thing that really kills the experience for me is when a blog takes a long time to load. I don’t have time for that :)

    • Antonia says:

I totally agree with you! If a blog takes more than, say, 5 seconds, I just lose my patience and close the window. Usually it has to do with heavy images.

  6. Styleabaad says:

I love seeing inspirational collages (even if it’s not the bloggers own photos) but I’m a sucker for fashion blogs on the other hand ; ) I don’t like too long posts – when there are over 15 pictures + loads of texts in one single post… I don’t even know what to comment on because it’s too overwhelming!

    • Antonia says:

Definitely! I don’t mind inspiration collages (even though I prefer the blogger’s own photography), but I like to know the source.

  7. I’m a snob when it comes to sources. If they don’t source/take their own photos, I more than likely won’t follow. x hivenn

I absolutely love your blog, though there are a few things that I have to disaggree with and maybe it’s because I am a teenager but I use a lot of punctuation and write letters over again, don’t really know why. but anyway.
maybe you could take a look at my blog and leave a comment about what you think abut my design and my blog in general though it might not really be anything for you after having read this list. I guess it looks a bit amature, but I’d love your opinion.
I also write in English though I live in Helsingborg.
I love your pictures and you seem like a great person!

    • Antonia says:

Then we’re almost neighbors, Eleanor! Nice to meet you, I’m glad you like Swedish Love Affair and I hope to see you here more often:)
Even though your blog might not meet the “requirements” in this post, it doesn’t matter as long as you like it yourself. You are not doing it to please anyone, and I’m sure there are people out there who really like your blog. Remember to have fun when blogging, that’s what it’s all about. At least for me it is:)

  9. Christina says:

The music thing is my biggest annoyance of any website, or any sound really. I hate opening a website to strange sounds.

  10. I agree with alot of the things you listed! I am maybe a bit guilty of not writing enough text in my blog though, as I just love taking photographs and sometimes like them to do most of the talking :P .

Something else to add to the list:

When everything about the blog is nice, but the pictures are so smaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallll!!! It ruins it for me a lot but I still might follow the blog.

Also, people that don’t reply to their comments. It makes you feel as if you’re not worthy of their time.

    • Antonia says:

Oh yeah, small pictures – definitely! Such a turn-off for me. Most likely I won’t click on the preview icon to see the full size anyway.
But i think most bloggers don’t reply to the comments in their blogs. Am I wrong maybe?

And I like the amount of text you have, it’s just perfect. It explains all the photos, but it’s still not too much.

      • I might be spoiled by the bloggers I follow, most of them reply to comments :D . I love how attentive to replying Sandra Beijer is, she has soooo many comments, but will often reply if you post something bit more than just “Love the pics” etc.

Haha, thanks for your comment about my text :D . Good to know it’s not scaring you away for one :D .
